EXPERIENCE:

                                    

1977-1979    

Graduate studies of Spanish Measles disease complex of grape-vines.  Assisted in development of auto-tutorial course in diseases of fruit and field crops.

 

1978-1979     

Served as Research Technician for the USDA Insects Harmful to Man and Other Animals Division.

 

1978               

Served as Research Technician on a grant to CSU, Fresno from Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co.  Responsibilities included quantification of agricultural soils for various pathogenic fungi after chemical treatment.

 

1979-1982     

Graduate work in isolation identification, and practical uses of Vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi relating to enhanced growth of plants.  During graduate studies served as a diagnostician in a plant disease clinic observing and diagnosing problemsto many agricultural and ornamental plants.  Also, acted as teaching assistant for two semesters for the University of Arizona Department of Plant Pathology teaching 'Diagnosis of Plant Diseases'.

 

1982-1990      

Partnership in an Agricultural Consulting business conducting investigations involved with crop damage cases.

 

1990-1992     

Consultant working as a Plant Pathologist, Agronomist and PestControl Advisor for Bio-Ag Services and JMLord, Inc. of Fresno,CA.  Also working as a private consultant with Mark Steinberg & Associates.

 

1992- Present  

Currently working as a private consultant with Whaley & Steinberg.

 

 A summary of professional experience since 1982 includes diagnosis of causes of agricultural and ornamental plant problems, in field and lab studies, photo and video documentation, sample collection (soil, water, tissue and waste effluent), lab results interpretation, economic loss calculations, report writing and expert testimony.  Experience also includes working extensively as a licensed California Pest Control Advisor specializing in Biological Control but also having practical experience with pesticide application, residue sampling, efficacy and toxicity.  Other duties have included irrigation and fertility management of many crops grown in California.

 

 

 

*EXAMPLES  OF PROJECTS AND INVESTIGATIONS:

 

 

1.         Pesticide Related Cases:

 

            a.  Off-site movement into crops of Urea-based herbicides.

            b.  Misapplication of pesticides including, Karmex, Eptam, Phenoxy herbicides,

                 Roundup, Bladex, Treflan, Triazines as well as many fungicides and 
                 insecticides. 

           c.   Misapplication of fertilizers and adjuvents have also been investigated.

 

2.         Pest Management Cases:

 

            a.  Isolation from diseased tissue and identification of pathogens from many types                     of crops and ornamental plants.

            b.  Eutypa disease of grapevines.

            c.  Various disease problems of tomatoes, including Phytophthora sp., bacterial

                 speck and virus diseases.

            d.  Spanish Measles of grapevines.

            e.  Phytophthora spp. caused diseases of many perennial crops including Kiwi,

                 Citrus, Almonds, Walnuts, Cherries and other Stone Fruits.

            f.   Powdery Mildew disease of various crops.

            g.  Mealybug damage to grapevines.

            h.  Russet Mite damage to tomatoes.

            i.  California Red Scale on Citrus.

            j.  Nematode diseases of many crops.

            k. Storage disease problems of onion, grapes, stone fruit, apples & brazil nuts,

            l.  Weed infestations in cotton, beans and other crops.

            m. Soil-borne disease problems of carrots.

 

3.         Special Projects:

 

            a.  Determine options for remediation of vineyard contaminated with herbicides

                 moved off site.

            b.  Determine options for remediation of crop land contaminated with a non-

                  registered herbicide.

            c.  Remediation of fungicide contaminated apples exposed to a non-registered

                 fungicide during packing.

            d.  Monitoring program for waste effluents related to raisin and winery facilities.

            e.  Determination of affects of cattle grazing on various species of endangered

                 plants.

            f.   Evaluation of cropped and non cropped acreage for agricultural production.

            g.  Evaluation of affects of using brine waste contaminated ground water on crops.

            h.  Evaluation of irrigation districts water use affects on soil chemistry &                  
                 drainage.
